The Laboratory is involved in the conduction and coordination of multicentric case-control studies on various neoplastic diseases and myocardial infarction. The aim of such studies is to formulate, define and test hypotheses about potential risk factors for various diseases, and to quantify relative and attributable risks for genetic and environmental factors (such as tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, diet, physical activity, drug use, hormonal factors) in the Italian population. The Laboratory also conducts systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the same topics.
Main research projects:
• Case-control study on the determinants of bladder cancer
• Investigation of the association between coffee intake and the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases
• Advancing the aetiology of soft tissue sarcoma: risk factors in an epidemiological interdisciplinary study (supported by the Italian Association for Cancer Research, AIRC)
• Conduction of a case-control study on risk factors of the adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardias to evaluate new etiological hypotheses
