Biochemical Research Technician
Courses are open to students who have a technical diploma in chemistry or biology, preferably not
more than two years earlier. In special cases candidates with diplomas in electronics, physics or
informatics will be considered.
Requirements
Candidates are expected to meet the following requirements:
- good general culture
- basic written and spoken English
- good training in organic and chemical chemistry
- aptitude for the team work
Course Admission
Course admission is based on qualification. Each candidate must undergo a written examination as
well as an interview at the Institutes in Milan or Bergamo. Course admission is highly
selective as there are always far more candidates than positions available. Positions are
purposely limited to ensure students receive close individual attention from their tutors, and to
make sure that they have adequate access to the Institute's scientific equipment. Entrance exams
are usually held in September and March.
Applications must be addressed to:
- General Secretariat:
scuola@marionegri.it by July 31st (for the fall Session)
and by February 28th (for the Spring session).
Registration
Registration to the Pharmacological Research Specialist and to the Biochemical Research Technician
Courses is free.
Study grants
The Institute awards fellowships to students who pass an entrance examination. Candidates with no
laboratory experience are asked to work full-time for one month as volunteers before the first
month's grant is paid. Trainees must start work by October 30th to be eligible for the first
year's course as Pharmacological Research Specialist and Biochemical Research
Technician.
Admission to subsequent years
Admission dor the first year and confirmation for subsequent years is decided by the Direction of
the Institute, on the basis of a recommendation from the Laboratory Head and after each student has
been interviewed to verify his/her aptitude for research, work to date and commitment.
At the end of each year the Laboratory Heads and the School Director meet to set the
trainees' marks.
Final examinations
Pharmacological research Specialists and Biochemical Research Technicians Examinations at the
end of the three-year training period are held before an external Commission nominated by the
Lombardy Region Educational Board.
The commission members are experts in various subjects, university professors,
technical/scientific managers from the pharmaceutical industry or public bodies.
Trainees are admitted to the examinations on the basis of their Laboratory Head's
recommendation. Students who have been absent for long periods or who leave the Institute before
the three years are up are not eligible for the examinations. Technicians who have not held at
least one in-house seminar during their training are also not eligible. Two seminars in case
it's a graduate student.
The
final examinations comprise:
- a practical laboratory test, when the candidate is expected to go over the main methods used in
his/her research work;
- a lesson during which the candidate will lecture on public on a scientific subject related to
his/her research project.
Examinations are open to the public and may be attended by representatives of companies
looking for staff.
Diplomas
Pharmacological Research Specialists and Biochemical Research Technicians will receive diplomas
issued officially by the Lombardy Region and the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological
Research. These have legal value throughout Italy and are recognised in competitions for public
posts, where they are worth a certain number of points. The Mario Negri Institute diplomas are
widely considered a guarantee of an excellent theoretical and practical training.
