The Library
The Library, specialised in pharmacology and clinical epidemiology, was
founded in 1963 thanks to a generous donation from the Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research
Foundation, in Denville, New Jersey, USA. In 1984 a second location was added at the Laboratori
Negri in Bergamo and in 1987, at the Negri Sud Consortium.
Numerous public and private organisations contribute to help keep it operative through
donations of money, books, and subscriptions to periodicals. Contributions from the Banca Popolare
di Milano in 1984 and the Astori family in 1997 were received in addition to those from the GA
Pfeiffer Research Foundations.
Another library is located at the Angelo and Angela Valenti Center for Health Economics
(CESAV). This Center, which performs research in the health sector with regards to economics and
management, was established in 1992.
What the library offers
The library has a collection of about 5000 textbooks, monographs and congressional
proceedings, and 250 periodicals of which a major part are in an electronic format.
The Library collaborates in the realisation of the
Italian Information Specialists’ (GIDIF,RBM) journal catalog which is updated annually, and
to the
Lombard Biomedical Library System project, and the
National Journal Catalog (ANCP) located at the University of Bologna.
The other Institute libraries are smaller in size but specialised in nephrology, rare
diseases, emergency medicine, and health economics.
From every computer in the Institute it is now possible to have access to more than 1500
electronic journals and to five of the most important databases: Medline, Cinhal, Cancerlit, the
Cochrane Library and Embase
Training
Every year courses on the use of the database and electronic journals are organised.
These courses are designed for use by those working at the Institute but outsiders who are
interested may attend.
Projects
Since 1994 the library has been part of the Lombard Biomedical Library System. Sixteen
university and research organisation libraries in Lombardy take part in this project which is
financed by the Lombardy Region and the Health Councillorship. The project permits easy, free
access to scientific information for all health workers in the Lombardy Region.
Publications
Bibliography of the Institute’s scientific publications, articles on information transfer,
treaties and acts of congress can be found on the web.
