Gianluigi Forloni, PhD (Rho (Mi) Italy, May 15, 1956) is Head of the
Neuroscience Department and of the Laboratory of Biology of Neurodegenerative Disorders
(BND), at the Mario Negri Institute in Milano.
He obtained the Industrial Chemistry Diploma in 1976 and the Degree of Biological
Science at the University of Milano in 1985. After two years of postdoc at the Department of
Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, he came back to the Mario Negri
Institute and between 1992 and 1996 he was the Head of Alzheimer's disease Unit. Since 1996 he is
the Chief of BND Lab and since 2002 the Head of the Neuroscience Department in the same Institute.
His scientific interest is focused on the biological and genetic bases of Alzheimer’s disease
(AD), Prion-related encephalopathies (PRE) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). In particular, he is
involved in studies, including potential therapeutic approaches, related to the role of protein
aggregation in the neurodegenerative diseases and mechanisms of neuronal death using in vitro and
in vivo models. Dr. Forloni has been a member of the European Commission committees for the
evaluation of projects in the area of neuroscience, aging and prion diseases. He is now a member of
the coordination group of NEUROPRION, a Network of Excellence established within the Sixth
Framework Programme (2004-2008). He is President of the Italian Association on Brain Aging Research
