Financing
Mario Negri’s own will was generous enough to build and equip the original
Institute, but its everyday work is financed by contributions, donations and research contracts
from public and private sources, foundations, and associations (particularly the Italian
Association for Cancer Research – AIRC, the Monzino Foundation, Telethon and 30 Ore per la
Vita). Generous financing also comes from Italian and foreign companies, banks and
private citizens.
Funds from abroad, particularly from the USA, were decisive in the Institute’s first 15
years. They often reached 56% of the total, and the yearly average was always more than 40%
of the budget. In recent years the Italian share has grown considerably.
The fact that we have so many sources of finance – more than 200 – and none of our research
programs takes up more than 10% of the total budget, is the Institute’s best guarantee of
independence. However, we still need all the help we can get! Small or large gifts from
private supporters are particularly appreciated as not only do they show the donor’s awareness of
the need to boost scientific research and maintain teaching programs, but they encourage all the
scientists at the Institute to keep working for the good of human health.
