Animal Care Unit

The general objective of the Animal Care Unit service is to ensure that all experiments carried out on laboratory animals present in the facility take place in compliance with current legislation and according to widely shared international criteria. The use of animals for experimental or for other scientific purposes, is regulated by Legislative Decree 26/2014 implementing Community Directive 2010/63/EU. This decree states that, in order to contribute to the quality of science while respecting animals welfare, in all experimental protocols the principle of 3R (art.1) is applied to:

  • Replacement: use of alternative methods
  • Reduction: use of fewer animals
  • Refinement: protection of animal welfare

In order to ensure maximum respect for the correct procedures for the use of laboratory animals, the animal enclosures of the Mario Negri Pharmacological Research Institute applied for and obtained in 2010 the UNI EN ISO 9001 Certification: 2008 for the following activity: Provision of animal husbandry and animal testing services dedicated to biomedical research projects.
