The Department of Neuroscience studies neurological and psychiatric diseases, evaluating biological bases, some clinical aspects and the quality of health services. Furthermore, it aims to understand the causes, describe the symptoms and identify therapeutic strategies able to attenuate or arrest the clinical course.

ObJECTIVES

  • Study the most common neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, or even rarer such as prion diseases or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (SLA). Investigate the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms, using in vivo and in vitro models, up to clinical and epidemiological research
  • Develop therapeutic approaches starting from experimental models, and then translate them at the clinical level
  • Study aging to identify possible risk factors and benefits in developing dementia, paying specific attention to genetic aspects
  • Evaluate the quality of services and the impact of geriatric polypharmacy aimed at developing more appropriate therapeutic protocols
  • Identify biomarkers in the different neurological diseases, able to monitor its progress, to improve the diagnostic accuracy and to evaluate the therapeutic impact
  • Identify and characterize classical and innovative biomarkers in plasma, exosomes and CSF. All these elements combined with genetic investigations allow the development of risk profiles useful in neurological patients selection

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES

  • Use of experimental models, developed and characterized in vivo, able to replicate some of the biological phenomena underlying various neurological pathologies
  • Behavioral, histopathological and biochemical analysis of the models studied in order to develop and evaluate possible therapeutic approaches
  • Use of biomaterials and nanotechnologies correlated to drug release, cell treatments and diagnostic applications
  • Morphological analysis with different microscopic and image techniques, MRI, confocal microscopy, multifoton and super-resolution microscopy
  • Use of neuronal, mixed glial and organo typic cell cultures, in 3D through morphological, biochemical and electrophysiological analyzes
  • Perform epidemiological studies using geriatric cohort, which includes several groups of centenarians
  • Geriatric analysis of the quality of services and of protocols for polypharmacy, within national and international networks
  • Use of cellular therapies both in experimental and clinical contexts
Results
  • Development of new therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer's disease
