The Clinical Research Laboratory in Solid Tumors coordinates and supports national and international interventional and observational studies in the field of solid malignancies, operating both as a non-profit sponsor and as a Contract Research Organization (CRO) supporting research groups and national and international institutions.
The Laboratory’s activities focus on the development and evaluation of new therapeutic strategies and the optimization of care pathways for oncology patients.
The Laboratory manages all phases of clinical research, from protocol development to regulatory and operational activities, through to data analysis and publication of results. These activities are carried out by a team of Project Managers and Trial Managers working closely with statisticians, data managers, Clinical Monitors, and the Pharmacovigilance and Quality Assurance functions, as well as with Pharmaceutical Companies, Regulatory Authorities, and professionals affiliated with cooperative groups, academic institutions, and national and international research centers.
The Laboratory contributes to the implementation of studies designed to address relevant clinical questions, generate scientific evidence to support oncology practice, inform treatment decisions, foster innovation in oncology, and promote the continuous improvement of clinical practice.
CLINICAL TRIALS IN IMMUNOTHERAPY
Some clinical trials evaluate the efficacy of drugs designed to enhance the activity of lymphocytes against cancer cells, particularly by removing inhibitory mechanisms that limit immune cell function. The main research projects focus on lung cancer and melanoma.
CLINICAL TRIALS WITH TARGETED THERAPIES
Development and coordination of clinical trials evaluating targeted therapies in solid tumors, with a particular focus on breast and colorectal cancers. Research activities include the assessment of biological agents and targeted treatments, such as anti-HER2 therapies, CDK4/6 inhibitors, and anti-angiogenic agents, as well as the identification of predictive biomarkers of treatment response.
Clinical studies about drug repositioning in oncology
Some drugs used for non oncological diseases could reveal antitumor activity or ability to increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs. Since these drugs are generally very cheap, the potential of this kind of study could be examined only in nonprofit pharmacological research institutes, such as our institute. The main ongoing clinical studies investigating the effectiveness of drug repositioning concern breast and ovarian cancer.
Clinical studies about therapy of rare tumors and of rare subpopulations of frequent tumors
Clinical studies on rare tumors have to face with problems of difficult recruitment of patients and with the lack of invested economic resources. This kind of research requires necessarily the contribution of different clinical centers coordinated by nonprofit institutions.
