The Public Health Department’s research is aimed at understanding the factors that influence the health of individuals and entire populations in order to design effective interventions to respond to health needs. Special emphasis is placed on prevention in order to, both, reduce the risks of catching diseases, with information and interventions provided increasingly early, and to encourage active participation and involvement.

ObJECTIVES

  • Improving the overall wellbeing of mothers and of children, from birth and throughout development
  • The epidemiologic monitoring and evaluation of the rational use of drugs and vaccines
  • Assessment of the diagnostic-therapeutic pathways concerning psychiatric disorders throughout development, both in hospital and primary care practices
  • Information, training, and opportunities for debate for health and social care workers and the general population
  • Critical analysis of the expediture and cost/benefit ratio of the national health service’s interventions and care provided
  • Methodologic support for the planning of health care interventions by the national health service

METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES

Laboratory for Mother and Child Health

  • monitoring and epidemiological evaluation of the use, and effects, of drugs and vaccines
  • evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways carried out in the paediatric population for neuropsychiatric disorders
  • interventions in the general hospital and primary care practices
  • analysis of the socio-sanitary variables related to health status, with a focus on children
  • transfer of health information to the community

Laboratory of Medical Researchand Consumer Involvement

  • Development of information models and training courses
  • Organization of consensus conferences, citizen juries, guidelines, ad-hoc surveys with associations, research on the knowledge/attitudes/behaviours of citizens, patients, and associations, disease registries, and literature reviews
  • Evaluation of the type and quality of disease and treatment information provided
  • Research on the best ways to disseminate information on health and on the results of scientific research
  • Development and improvement of decision aids and internet websites

Laboratory of Clinical Epidemiology

  • Assessment of intensive care interventions
  • Probabilistic models that permit the evaluation and continuous improvement of clinical activities
  • Development of informatics technologies aimed at supporting the management of information and clinical knowledge in all its phases, from the manual or automatic collection of data to the redistribution of new knowledge
  • Design, conduction, and statistical analysis of observational epidemiological studies on the influence of a wide array of risk factors on specific diseases and conditions such as allergies and nosocomial or other types of infections

 Laboratory of Medical Informatics

  • Promotion and development of methods to achieve active involvement, empowerment, and health literacy courses on priority public health issues
  • Independent, ad-hoc training and information courses for representatives of citizen and patient associations aimed at providing tools for an effective dialogue with the medical and scientific worlds

“Angelo e Angela VALENTI” Centre for Health Economics

  • Economic assessment methods involving the cost and benefit analysis of possible health care alternatives
  • Comparative analysis based mainly on the study of foreign health services in order to identify possible novelties to propose to the national health service and to extend, more generally, to the European Union countries

Results

  • Creation of an ADHD in children registry that has led to a reduction in the use of medicines
  • Quality improvement in the intensive care departments of Italian hospitals thanks to interventions that have led to a decrease in mortality
